Chapter Seventeen

Having arrived home after ten the previous evening, Steve’s wife left him to sleep until he woke. Saturday morning, September the 23rd was a bright dry day and Alison had made plans for the family to have a picnic in the park. Steve had explained he had to go to work this morning but promised to be home by one p.m.

After a leisurely breakfast and spending some quality time playing with his daughter Steve set out for the Yard at 09.22 a.m. He decided to walk as it was a nice morning and the walk allowed him to clear his head and concentrate on the Norfolk murders. He stopped at his usual coffee shop and despite having decided to give up coffee, bought two takeaways. One for him and one for Poppy.

When he walked into his office, Poppy was hard at it typing away furiously into her computer. She looked up, saw the coffee and without being offered one, put her hand out and mumbled, “Thank you.”

Steve grinned.

Poppy was obviously busy and as she typed away, she said, “Nothing from the CPS yet sir?”

The DCI entered his inner office and sat behind his desk enjoying the coffee. Having been away for three days, his desk was covered with reusable internal mail envelopes. He opened a few and finding nothing of immediate interest, he placed the remaining unopened envelopes in one of the trays on his desk. He told himself he’d catch up with everything on Monday.

The phone on his desk burst into life. “DCI Burt.”

“Good morning, Chief Inspector. This is Cedric Spindle with the CPS. I was just checking you were in. I was handed a file late last night and told it was urgent. I’m fairly new and wondered if I could come round and discuss the case.”

Steve sat back and rolled his eyes. He thought Another bloody child. He told himself he was getting fed up with nursing green rookie kids. He knew it wasn’t this lad’s fault he was new and conceded everyone had to start somewhere, but why did a lot of them finish up on his doorstep?

“Of course, Mr Spindle but I’m not here for long. I just want your opinion on the evidence and I’m off to enjoy my weekend.”

“I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

Poppy, as usual, had been listening in. She called through, “Was that the CPS?”

Steve couldn’t be annoyed with his admin assistant so simply said yes.

Poppy appeared at Steve’s office door. She was dressed in jeans, a blouse and a pink sweater. Steve was tempted to say she should dress like this all the time she was at work, although he knew he would never say this to Poppy.

His assistant had obviously finished whatever she was inputting and sat in front of Steve sipping her coffee. She was about to start her campaign for frontline duties when the large figure of Commander Alfie Brooks appeared. Knowing she had been thwarted, she withdrew gracefully allowing the commander to take her seat. She closed Steve’s office door behind her giving the two senior officers some privacy.
